    Will South Carolina Ever Learn ?

    This week the state house of South Carolina voted to nullify Obamacare, making it a criminal act if anyone in the state tried to use any part of it. Do states have the power to nullify federal laws? This question has been asked before, and South Carolina is best known attempting to subvert the federal government with this method.

    The Defense of Marriage Act and the Supreme Court

    On Tuesday and Wednesday last week, the United States Supreme Court began hearing arguments for Hollingsworth v. Perry, the case that will decide the fate of Proposition 8 and United States v. Windsor, the Defense of Marriage Act. Both laws being challenged prohibit same sex couples from getting married.

    Detroit As A Model

    Governor Rick Snyder announced last week that Detroit had been recommended by a review team for an emergency manager appointment. The city council and residents of the city reacted strongly to the recommendation, promising to find another solution and not accept the Governor's recommendation. The city has options for how to fix their revenue problems, the main question is will the state government in Lansing allow that to happen.

    Singing the Sequester Blues

    On March 1st the United States government went into a sequester. A sequester refers to someone going into hiding or receding away. In terms of the government it refers to a series of deep budget cuts that will shut down vital parts of our federal government and affect thousands of people either through employment, health care services or food and assistance programs. The cuts will affect many parts of the government we take for granted to keep us safe and healthy every day.
